Signs of burnout and what to do about it

ALIVIA Team · Updated October 8, 2026
Burnout is prolonged exhaustion from chronic stress, often linked to work, that leaves you drained, detached and less effective. This guide is informational and cannot diagnose burnout; only a professional can assess you.

Common signs

• Constant exhaustion that rest does not fix.
• Cynicism or detachment from your work or the people around you.
• Feeling ineffective or that nothing you do matters.
• Trouble concentrating, headaches, sleep problems.
• Dreading the start of the day.

Burnout vs ordinary stress

Stress tends to feel like too much: too many demands, too much pressure. Burnout tends to feel like not enough: drained, empty, with little motivation. Burnout often follows long periods of stress.

What can help

• Set boundaries: limit after-hours messages and say no when you are at capacity.
• Protect sleep, meals and movement.
• Take real breaks during the day and use your time off.
• Talk to your manager or HR about workload if you can.
• Reconnect with something outside work that you enjoy.
• Talk to someone you trust.

When to get help

If you have felt like this for weeks, if it affects your health or relationships, or if you feel hopeless, see a doctor or mental health professional. If you feel you can't go on or you are thinking about harming yourself, don't wait: contact your local emergency number right away, go to the nearest emergency room, or find a helpline for your country at findahelpline.com.
