← ALIVIA BlogHow to stop overthinking: 7 ways to calm a racing mind
ALIVIA Team · Updated October 8, 2026
Overthinking is replaying the same thoughts again and again: what happened, what might happen, what you said. You cannot switch it off by force, but you can loosen its grip. This guide is informational and does not replace professional support.
7 ways to calm a racing mind
1. Write it down: getting thoughts onto paper makes them smaller and clearer.
2. Breathe slowly: make your exhale longer than your inhale.
3. Schedule worry time: set aside 15 minutes a day to think about it; outside that window, jot it down and postpone.
4. Ask: "Can I do something about this now?" If yes, take the first small step; if not, let it go for now.
5. Move: a short walk breaks the loop.
6. Ground yourself with the 5-4-3-2-1 technique or a warm shower.
7. Notice the thought without fighting it: "I am having the thought that..." then return to what you were doing.
At night
Keep a notebook by the bed, write down what is on your mind and tell yourself it is saved for tomorrow. Avoid scrolling your phone in bed.
