Journaling for anxiety: how to start, with 15 prompts

ALIVIA Team · Updated October 8, 2026
Writing down what you feel can make anxiety less tangled. A journal gives your worries somewhere to go other than your head. It is a self-care habit, not a treatment, and it works best alongside other support.

A simple 5-minute routine

1. Pick a regular time: after waking up or before bed.
2. Set a 5-minute timer and write without editing or judging.
3. Describe what you feel in your body and what thoughts keep coming up.
4. Finish with one small thing you can do next, or one thing that went okay today.

15 prompts to get you started

• What am I feeling in my body right now?
• What is the worry that keeps coming back?
• What is the worst that could happen, and how likely is it really?
• What would I tell a friend who felt this way?
• What is in my control today, and what is not?
• What triggered this feeling?
• What helped the last time I felt like this?
• What am I avoiding, and why?
• What small step could I take today?
• What three things went well today?
• Who could I reach out to?
• What do I need right now: rest, company, movement, quiet?
• What am I proud of this week?
• What would a calmer version of me do?
• What am I grateful for today?

Mistakes to avoid

• Waiting for the "perfect" way to write: messy is fine.
• Rereading only the bad days; notice the improvements too.
• Turning it into a chore: three times a week still helps.
