How to calm anxiety fast: 5 techniques you can use right now

ALIVIA Team · Updated October 8, 2026
Anxiety shows up in the body: a racing heart, tight chest, shaky hands. These techniques can take the edge off in a few minutes. They are general wellbeing tips and do not replace professional care.

1. Slow your breathing

1. Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds.
2. Breathe out slowly through your mouth for 6 to 8 seconds.
3. Repeat at least 5 times. The long exhale is what helps the body settle.

2. Ground yourself with your senses

Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell and 1 you can taste. It pulls your attention back to the present.

3. Use cold water or temperature

Splash cool water on your face or hold something cold in your hands for a minute. The change in sensation can interrupt the spiral.

4. Move your body

Walk around the block, stretch your shoulders or shake out your hands. Movement burns off some of the tension anxiety builds.

5. Name what is happening

Say to yourself: "This is anxiety. It feels awful, but it will pass." Labelling the feeling often makes it less overwhelming.

When to get help

If anxiety shows up most days, stops you from working, studying or sleeping, or comes with panic attacks, talk to a mental health professional. If you feel you can't go on or you are thinking about harming yourself, don't wait: contact your local emergency number right away, go to the nearest emergency room, or find a helpline for your country at findahelpline.com.
